7 Things Movies Always Get Wrong About College

1. Black People Don't Exist...?

Okay, so it might not be entirely fair to hold a flame to the feet of college movies for whitewashing their campuses, since this is a widespread issue in all of Hollywood that's only recently begun to diversify its casting. But mainstream college movies - and teen movies, in general - play right into the notion that there is only a cluster of black people who manage to get into college.

Yet, in the United States - where the majority of films in this genre take place - there are roughly 20 million students enrolled in undergraduate schools. And of that number, about 3 million are black. That's 15 percent of the student body.

So where are all the black folks in these movies? Why do we only see, on average, one or two African Americans at the center of the action?

There are, of course, a few notable outliers in the genre that focus on black education, like The Great Debaters, School Daze, and Dear White People, but far too many mainstream, postsecondary films use only "the token black guy" to get a few cheap laughs.
