7 Ways The Meg Was Much Better Than You Expected

6. Twist Upon Twist

Look, no one is saying The Meg is the most complex movie of all time. It’s not going to go toe to toe with Fight Club or Inception without getting its guts ripped out. But for movies of its calibre, it’s hard to remember one that kept you guessing quite so much.

There are at least three times it looks to be over before it actually finishes. Halfway through, Jonas completes his mission. However, given how much of the movie is left, it’s hardly shocking that there’s more work to do.

After the usual bickering, prep scenes and romantic sub-plot, there’s a high-octane action sequence where the shark gets caught. The movie is fully aware of what it is, giving viewers that expected feel good moment of the crew all joking around, having fun. They saved the day! But big red spoiler klaxon... There’s a second shark!

Though not a Keyser Soze level twist, it was a genuine surprise for the whole cinema. The movie keeps this up too, with the promised rescue turning out to be a hoax as well.

The Meg deserves credit for investing so much effort into its scenes that it completely sells every blindsiding twist.
