Viggo Mortensen may have come on board as a cast member in The Lord Of The Rings€™ films late, but what he lacked in timeliness, he more than made up for in intensity. Jumping straight into filming and with little opportunity to prepare for his role, he spent time camping in the forest in costume as Aragorn, fishing as Aragorn, generally being a badass around the New Zealand countryside as Aragorn.

Not content with all that, he also took to carrying his sword around even during his downtime off-set - which, apparently, isn€™t enough to get you arrested in New Zealand. Hardly surprising, then, that he injured himself along the way. In a scene in The Two Towers, Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas come across a burning pile of corpses and find evidence to suggest Merry and Pippin are amongst them.

Distraught, Aragorn kicks a Urak-Hai€™s helmet before screaming and dropping to his knees in agony at the realisation the hobbits are dead. Er, except that€™s not quite why he screamed - Mortensen had actually just broken two of his toes by booting the helmet, something that can only be described as €˜bloody painful€™. Peter Jackson liked his reaction so much, he kept it in the final cut.
