5. Lon Chaney In Anything

Lon Chaney became known as The Man of a Thousand Faces, thanks to his habit of never having the same appearance in any movie twice. He was called upon to play horror monsters or disfigured men, such as the Phantom of the Opera (seen above) or the Hunchback of Notre Dame (seen below), and he was barely recognisable from one performance to the next.

Chaney was also unique in that he did all of his makeup work himself, and in many cases inventing new techniques, which continued to be used after his death, and which formed the basis for much later make-up work.
