8 Alternative Awards For 2016's Movies
5. Most Uncannily Prescient Use Of A Dead Kennedys Song - Green Room
Generally speaking, horror was one of the most dependable genres in 2016, with the likes of The Boy, The Conjuring 2 and even Ouija: Origin Of Evil receiving positive word of mouth from critics and audiences.
One of the real stand outs was Jeremy Saulnier’s The Green Room, and with its emphasis on far-right groups, violence and discrimination, it’s the kind of film that (unfortunately) sums up 2016 better than any superhero film or kiddie animation.
The plot couldn’t be simpler: after witnessing a murder, a punk band (who’d earlier taunted the skinhead crowd by playing Nazi Punks F**k Off by The Dead Kennedys) end up running for their lives from a group of Neo Nazis. What makes the movie is the casting, with the late great Anton Yelchin a perfect everyman, but the honours go to Patrick Stewart who, cast against type, is chillingly believable as the Neo-Nazi leader.
