8 Amazing 2016 Films You've Already Missed

1. Krisha

Written and directed by Trey Edward Shults and based on his 2014 short, the film tells the story of Krisha (played by Krisha Fairchild) who attends Thanksgiving with her family having not seen them for a whole decade. It's here that the reason for Krisha's familial estrangement becomes extremely apparent, as past conflicts seep into the narrative like a slow, rage-building poison.

The entire runtime is laced with a remarkable tension, the kind that can only exist within a family. It's not long before viewers learn that Krisha is a drug addicted alcoholic, and so the volatile nature of her participation in Thanksgiving becomes painfully apparent.

What's most remarkable about the film is the nature of its creation. With this being Shults' first feature length project, he decided to shoot everything in his own mother's home, even going as far as to cast the characters in the movie using his own non-actor family.

You'd think this would be disastrous, but it winds up providing an emotional rawness that's extremely unique, and quite unlike any family drama you've ever seen.
