2. The Witch
When it comes to modern horror films, the most common criticism is that many rely on nothing but jump scares. Robert Eggers' The Witch, on the other hand, is deeply unsettling throughout its entire run while leaning on practically none.
The story centres on a Puritan family from the seventeenth century who are excommunicated from their Christian plantation and who subsequently build a farm on the edge of a large forest. While there, it becomes apparent that the family believe that a terrible evil lurks within the woods, though whether or not this stems from religious ignorance is a central mystery.
With its use of chilling music and oppressive yet gorgeous cinematography, The Witch manages to get under your skin without sudden noises and cheap scares. Witnessing the misfortunes that befall the family and the tension between them that this breeds plays out like an ominous tragedy, resulting in the kind of terror that seeps way, way beneath the surface of your skin.
