The Film: Batman 1989

When you watch Willem Dafoe's turn as The Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man - particularly as he loses his grip on reality - you can see a very specific brand of mania that would have worked well for a character like the villain. There's just something so delightfully expressive and menacing about his face and voice and it felt like a match made in heaven.

Clearly, Tim Burton was well aware of how well it would have worked as he considered him to play the Joker in Batman 1989. He was never actually offered the role, but he's now become one of the most famous Almost Cast actors in Hollywood.

In an interview with THR, Dafoe revealed that it was Batman 1989 screenwriter Sam Hamm who thought he was perfect for the Joker based almost entirely on his cheekbones. Sometimes, it pays to look a certain way.
