8 Big Movie Cliffhangers That Will NEVER Be Resolved
6. Who's Infected? - The Thing (1982)
John Carpenter's horror classic is renowned for its amazing practical special effects, spine-tingling score and the uber downbeat ending. In the final moments of the film, Kurt Russell is seemingly the sole survivor, having destroyed the entire base to ensure the creatures destruction. But as he sits among the ruins, Childs, another survivor who was presumed dead, emerges alive and well. And is quite possibly infected.
Russell's character is too weary and beaten to question Childs' humanity, and instead offers his friend/foe a drink. And the movie ends as both men sit there, resigned to their fate of either freezing to death, or for one of them to reveal their true nature.
It's a grim finale, and the debate over who might be infected still rages: some fans claim that Childs' lack of visible breath indict he's an alien copy, but this is likely just a weird trick of the lighting.
Carpenter has stated he would have liked to make a sequel that followed on from this ending, but the film's lack of box office success prevented it.
