8 Big Movie Cliffhangers That Will NEVER Be Resolved

5. That One Pesky Egg - Godzilla (1998)

Basically a marketing campaign disguised as a film, the 1998 Godzilla is a much-hated affair. Starring a paycheck-collecting Matthew Broderick and directed by Roland Emmerich, it saw the titular beast reimagined as a giant iguana dinosaur stomping around New York without so much as the slightest hint of subtlety.

The original Japanese Godzilla spawned about 600 sequels, so of course the studio involved wanted their American update to launch a franchise of its own, which the ending reflected. After Godzilla is finally slain and his nest of eggs - hidden in Madison Square Garden - is destroyed the heroes breathe a sigh of relief. But oh no! The last shot of the film reveals that one egg survived the blast, and the camera zooms in as a little baby Godzilla breaks out of it.

But despite this threat of more films to come, the critical panning and lukewarm box office response made sure a follow-up didn€™'t happen. Which is a mighty good thing considering how well handled the 2014 reboot was.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
