8 Big Movie Cliffhangers That Will NEVER Be Resolved
4. The Hero's Arc - Unbreakable
A long, long time ago, M. Night Shyamalan was considered an exciting, talented young filmmaker. Tipped as a successor to Spielberg, he wrote and directed visually inventive, character driven stories like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, and made the twist ending into an art form.
That guy then disappeared, and his evil replacement came along and cranked out soul-destroying duds like The Happening and After Earth. While Unbreakable doesn't seem as universally loved as The Sixth Sense, its reputation has grown in the years since release. Not only was it incredibly entertaining, but it was a little ahead of its time too; being a predecessor to all the gritty comic book movies that Batman Begins ushered in.
While not strictly a cliff-hanger, the film left enough unanswered questions and possibilities to make it feel like one. When the ending revealed that it was actually Samuel L. Jackson's fragile character who orchestrated the train crash to find his defining counter-point it was supposed to set up a trilogy that would follow Willis' generation into a real hero.
But part two never arrived, with Shyamalan being too busy making terrible movies to get around to it. There has been talk over the years of it happening, and while Unbreakable has developed a cult fanbase, the odds of a true follow-up are slim at best.
