8 Biggest Casting Mistakes In 2016's Superhero Movies

1. Jesse Eisenberg As Lex Luthor

The latest trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice finally shed some light on what we should expect from Jesse Eisenberg's take on Lex Luthor, and it turns out that those who predicted that he would basically be playing a slightly more sinister version of The Social Network's Mark Zuckerberg weren't wrong! As a result, the excitement surrounding his performance isn't exactly all that high right now. The direction being taken by Zack Snyder with the character isn't one it's easy to get too invested in, especially as he's less of a threatening foe you could picture being President of the United States and more like his annoying kid! This feels like a copy and past performance from the actor, albeit with a few new traits (his Lex definitely seems to be fairly unhinged, and that at least is somewhat intriguing). What's so disappointing about the decision to cast Eisenberg is how much better the other rumoured possibilities were. Someone like Joaquin Phoenix or Bryan Cranston being cast would have been incredibe, especially as the thought of either one of them butting heads with Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill is a million times more exciting! Eisenberg is a talented actor, but he's not someone with a whole lot of gravitas. Like Jared Leto's Joker, this is a casting decision which feels like it stems from a need to make a change for the sake of change, and it's impossible to ever picture this Lex being the DCEU's big bad as result.
