8 Biggest Omissions From The Oscar Nominations 2014

4. Robert Redford - Best Actor, 'All Is Lost.'

'All Is Lost' shows genuine cinematic legend taking on the role of a man forced to sail into a storm during a solo voyage. With a stunning performance and with that legend being 77-year old Robert Redford, it is hard to imagine why the Oscars have ignored this performance. I could only come up with three suggestions; First, Bruce Dern seems to have taken the token 'old dog' nomination in the Best Actor category leaving no room for Redford. Second, it could be suggested that since this a film with very little dialogue and literally just one actor, it is not one for the mainstream. However, the same could have been said about 2012's near silent winner 'The Artist' which leads me to suspect that this is one instance where the promotional push for awards never got going, meaning that 'All Is Lost' itself got lost amongst the billboard-hogging likes of 'American Hustle' and '12 Years A Slave'. Regardless of promotion or hype, 'All Is Lost' is a heroic one man show that showcases Redford's extraordinary abilities and shows that, even aged 77, he is still capable of hitting career highs.
