The Ocean at the End of the Lane has been eyed for production ever since it was released. Written by Neil Gaiman, who gave us Coraline, Stardust and American Gods, the coming-of-age mystery and fantasy novel came out in 2013 and follows an author who returns home after a long absence and begins to recall a series of bizarre supernatural events in his home, as well as his relationship with a young girl called Lettie Hempstock.

A book full of ghosts, weird creatures, and frank discussions about childhood and growing up, The Ocean is a wonderfully crafted book that is equal parts odd and heartwarming.

When it was released, it was picked up by Focus Pictures, who aimed to make the film with Tom Hanks in a producing role, but since then nothing has been spoken of the project. As late as 2019, actor Simon Pegg has said he wants to make the book into a mini-series, but again nothing more has been divulged about his plans.

Needless to say, The Ocean would make for a stunning film. It has just the right amount of peculiarities and heart to be a future family classic, and if adapted right the film could be just as good as the book.
