8 Classic Movies Hated By Their Directors
2. Fritz Lang - Metropolis
Metropolis is a groundbreaking silent film from 1927, featuring elaborate special effects and visuals that would inspire the likes of Blade Runner, Brazil, Star Wars and best of all, Queen’s music video for Radio Gaga.
It’s pretty much the great granddaddy of the sci-fi genre, and you’d be hard pressed to find anybody who’d give it a bad review. That’s unless you asked director Fritz Lang about it, who would have given it a low rating on the IMDb. To quote the man himself, he “detested” Metropolis after it was completed.
In the end, he thought the movie was “silly and stupid”, and that its political subtext didn’t work because it was essentially a fairytale. He also wasn’t fond of the Nazi party’s admiration for it, which led him to flee Germany when they offered him the chance to become head of a film studio making propaganda for them.
