8 Classic Movies Hated By Their Directors

1. Orson Welles - Citizen Kane

Temple Of Doom
Warner Bros.

Citizen Kane is often voted the best film ever made, and filmmakers regularly cite it as one of the most important films in history. It’s really good, basically. It might come as a shock to learn Welles himself kind of hated it, but not because he thought it sucked.

Kane became something of an albatross for him and despite actors and producers telling him how much they loved it, they still wouldn’t hire him for other projects. He also felt some of his other movies were much better, and people’s obsession with it slowly began to drive him mad.

Welles wasn’t much of a fan of his own work because he always felt he could have done a better job, so he couldn’t appreciate the love Citizen Kane received. Considering he made one of the best films ever, he obviously set his bar a little too high.

Can you think of any other filmmakers who hated one of their own movies, despite the film being considered a masterpiece? Share them with us in the comments below.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
