8 Completely Ridiculous Movie Concepts Currently In Development
6. Grumpy Cat
It's really quite difficult to understand how Hollywood manages to latch onto certain properties. Are there a bunch of corporate big-wigs shacked up in a downtown studio lot, browsing trending hashtags and jumping on anything that seems remotely popular?
It sure seems like it.
Announced in 2013, Grumpy Cat was optioned by studio Broken Road Productions, who intended to give the popular Internet-celebrity his own "Garfield-like feature-film". The cat would, essentially, embark on a Stuart Little-esque family-friendly adventure, which sounds way too happy and joyful to star a creature that looks like it's permanently smelling a fart.
The filmmakers could always approach it as an origin story; just as the recent Angry Birds movie explored how the birds gained their titular emotion, the Grumpy Cat movie could delve deep into the kitty's miserable, bleak past - but it's still hard to look past the shallowness of the premise.
Development Status: It's been relatively quiet since that initial announcement (and a terrible, unrelated 2014 TV-movie probably didn't help), but Grumpy Cat has yet to be officially cancelled, and since the feline continues to be immensely popular to this day, it wouldn't be surprising if the movie picked up steam again soon.
