2. How Could Marie Have Been The Killer From Any Logical Perspective? - High Tension (2003)
The Plot Twist: Gory as hell, frightening and - above all - on track to becoming a truly great modern horror movie, the French flick
High Tension decides that, in its final ten minutes, it wants to ruin itself entirely by way of an irritating and totally illogical plot twist that makes no sense. The plot concerns a farm girl whose family are murdered, whilst she is captured and taken by a terrifying truck driver serial killer, and it's up to her visiting friend, Marie, to go rescue her. But it turns out (brace yourself) that Marie is
actually the serial killer all along.
But, Uh... This is a twist for the sake of a twist, pure and simple, but the fact that it exists actually means the movie can't and doesn't work in any way, shape or form. The story we witnessed simply could not have taken place if Marie was the killer all along - we see, after all, scenes where the "killer" and Marie - apparently the same person, remember - are in different places at the same time. Can she teleport? If she can, then this isn't mentioned in the movie at all. Always mention if your characters can teleport, because otherwise stuff like this happens.
