1. Batman Begins
Batman was in dire straits in 1997. The abomination that was Batman and Robin had hurt the credibility of Bruce Wayne and his secret identity so much so that Warner Brothers waited another 8 years before releasing the next instalment. Taking a chance on then relatively unknown director Christopher Nolan, the franchise was given a new lease of life with a reboot named Batman Begins. The film looked to instil a darker, more serious tone with the titular character and bring him into the real world. The film is a classic of the genre, but it might be the final scene that had fan boys jumping out of their seats more than any other. With Batman and Commissoner Gordon standing on the GCPD rooftop, Gordon approaches Batman with a new problem. He explains that because Batman has appeared, escalation will become a problem. Whats revealed next would be the first mention of arguably the greatest villain in cinema history, Heath Ledgers Joker. After the Joker card is revealed and the two finish their conversation, Batman announces his full arrival to Gotham City by flying into the screen as the credits roll. Sorry Neo, not even you are more bad ass than Batman flying into the screen.

As a pretty nerdy guy, I've loved film and television since I was a wee lad. Growing up in Ireland, The Den was the show to watch with it playing Batman The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation and everything in between. I have an MA in Radio and Television Production and have written for various sites, hope you enjoy my articles/lists for What Culture!
