8 Great Horror Movies With Only One Character
4. Timecrimes
This Spanish movie - originally titled Los Cronocrimenes - is a brutal and utterly engrossing horror/sci-fi thriller that plays into its gimmick with irreverent joy. .
Timecrimes spins the tale of a man called Hector - played by Karra Elejalde - who finds himself caught in a time-loop and attempts to stop his previous selves from existing. Not only does the film feature primarily one character, but you get multiple versions of him thanks to the time-travelling antics. He tries desperately to reverse the catastrophic events that damage him and his wife Clara, but things inevitably go awry.
The horrifying set-up and sense of inescapable peril cause the title to feel utterly scary and constantly tense and although he does encounter others, such as a scientist over a walkie-talkie, an unnamed girl in the forest and his wife Clara, the film primarily follows Hector as he attempts to navigate this horrifying and violent scenario.
The film looks stunning and cleverly hides its low-budget flaws with creative set-ups and an ever convoluted plot that always feels logical despite how absurd and intertwined it becomes.
It's by no means a deep character study, but it goes a long way towards showing how a single character can carry a whole hour and a half long movie.
