The poor Halloween series had been abused for years with improbable, borderline embarrassing plotlines and ruining the scary mystique of Michael Myers with over-explanation.

Insert the 2nd reboot of the franchise within a decade after Rob Zombie's mixed interpretation, and after 9 other installments that all failed to truly capture the essence of what made the original great, expectations were 6 feet under.

Jamie-lee Curtis was on board to come back, but she had said yes to Halloween: Resurrection's script before so this did little to dispell the worries fans had. Then the movie released and turned out to be an almost flawless sequel.

Brilliantly utilizing the unknowable terror of Michael's psyche, and his inability to feel anything but hate, the film brings him back with a vengeance as he is once more a frightening unstoppable force.

It was a natural continuation of the franchise, ignoring everything apart from the original to give a realistic portrayal of where the characters had ended up. Curtis gives a statement performance as the aged and unhinged Laurie Strode to critical acclaim, and the plot delivers everything fans wanted from the chilling atmosphere to the electrifying murderous rampages Michael goes on.

The climax is also one of the biggest horror crowd-pleasers of the past few years, with an extended heart-pounding showdown between brother and sister that ends on a pitch-perfect note.

After seemingly endless reboots and sequels that all failed to hit the mark, Michael Myer's latest outing was a roaring success that truly understood what made the series work.
