8 Little Known Sacrifices Christian Bale Made To Make Nolan’s Batman Awesome

7. He Refused To Do The Dark Knight Rises With Robin

Not every sacrifice has to be physical and when it came around to writing the final film in the trilogy, Bale put the character himself on the line.

As they were telling origins of the Batman, Nolan and Goyer had managed to avoid an element of the Batman mythos that Adam West and Joel Schumacher had between themselves made into an emblem of Batman€™s former campness; with the Holy catchphrase and ever mocked homosexual connotations, Robin felt like a silly part of the franchise that didn'€™t belong in the serious world of The Dark Knight.

Bale certainly felt very strongly about this, going as far to say he wouldn'€™t have done the final film if Robin was included. It'€™s uncertain how much twisting of Nolan€™'s arm was actually required, but he certainly wasn€™'t going to risk losing his star.

Of course, the film does have Robin present in some form; the ending reveals it's Joseph Gordon Levitt's Blake'€™s birth name. Thankfully it was just an on-the-nose tease to fans, which Bale was probably humorous enough to forgive.
