8 Magical Movies That Turned Out Unsettling
2. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - The Child Catcher
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has been delighting families since 1968 with its singular mix of fantasy, adventure, and musical sing-a-longs.
After travelling by flying car to the fictional country of Vulgaria, the Potts family discover that it is ruled by evil tyrant Baron Bomburst, a man who becomes obsessed with stealing the titular car.
Vulgaria turns out to be completely void of children. Owing the Baroness Bomburst's dislike of the young, all of the country's children have been captured and imprisoned.
Enter one of cinema's creepiest and most disturbing villains: The Childcatcher.
Wearing a colourful clown-like overcoat and offering free sweets to the abandoned streets, the Childcatcher coaxes the Potts children out of hiding, where he traps them in his wagon. He then ditches his disguise, revealing himself to be dressed as a sort of Victorian undertaker with a large prosthetic nose.
Despite being over fifty years old, the scene is every bit as disturbing and unsettling today, and any parent looking to give their children nightmares need only show them this scene.
