8 Mistakes From Previous Versus Movies That Batman V Superman Should Avoid

7. Don€™t Completely Rewrite The Characters

Offending €˜Vs€™ Movie: Freddy Vs Jason A key problem with pitting two iconic characters against one another is the inevitable mixed feelings in the audience about who to rally behind. Naturally, each camp will have their devotees, but it€™s fair to assume the bulk of the viewers have a strong affection for both characters, so playing up one side for greater sympathy is surely a mistake. This is one of the key errors made by Freddy Vs Jason, the 2003 horror which crossed over the story worlds of the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street sagas for the mother of all slasher movie bloodbaths. They came up with a (comparatively speaking) logical explanation for the characters coming together, as the dream demon Freddy Kruger, trapped in Hell, needs the teenagers of Springwood to fear him again in order to regain his power on Earth. To this end, Freddy invades the subconscious of Jason Voorhees, the killing machine with a knack for returning from the grave, and tricks him into heading to Springwood to start hacking up the local young sinners, thereby reviving Freddy€™s legend. The problem is that this approach inherently casts the manipulated Jason in a victim role. The movie plays this up further by emphasising the more tragic elements of Jason€™s backstory, implying he has somehow always been an innocent in his (after-) life of mass murder... this despite the fact that he kills upwards of 20 in Freddy Vs Jason, one of the highest body counts of his already blood-soaked career. Oh, and we€™re suddenly being told that Jason is terrified of water: as logical as this might be considering he drowned as a child, never once has he given any indication of being aquaphobic before. Will Batman V Superman similarly rework its characters? Well, sorry to dig up that Man Of Steel complaint again, but many feel Superman€™s core nature has already been betrayed, and given that there are indications that Batman will use guns, there may be some grounds to fear that the filmmakers may have strayed a little too far with him as well.
