8 Most Disappointing Movie Sequels & Remakes Of 2021

4. Escape Room: Tournament Of Champions

The idea of a horror movie set in an escape room is a phenomenal idea, but it has to be well written. These types of stories need to be intricately planned. You need to be able to watch them again and look at all the important plot points that later turned out to be important that you missed the first time. It should be so smart that it actually makes you feel kind of stupid.

In this case, the film seems stupid. It's really hard to care about anything that happens as the film makes it so obvious that the company behind it, Minos, are hyper-competent and prescient that it's obvious that the characters can't beat them.

So even when it looks like the characters have won, you know they're going to be proven wrong and end up losing. The game cheats too. When characters start doing well in the puzzles, they start getting electric shocks or are otherwise handicapped. So when they do die there's no sense of "well they would have won if they were smarter and figured out the puzzle", there's just a feeling of "done, onto the next one" - completely unsatisfying.

There are some weird choices made too. It’s emphasised “unless you see someone die, they’re probably not dead” to justify someone coming back from the dead after sinking in sand. Smart idea, just one problem. Two people died from that method, so is the other person still alive too? We’ll never know. I mean, we might know in the next film, maybe.
