3. Blithe Spirit

Even if you haven't seen the 1945 version, it can't get much worse than this. Blithe Spirit was released in the UK two weeks into the year with almost zero promotion (always a good sign.) Noel Coward was a fantastic writer, and the bones of this flick should be solid.

Should be.

That's because the quality is all dependent on one thing: the performances. They need to feel natural as the dialogue is such that if it's delivered wrong it comes off unnatural. In this, everybody seems like they're going through the motions. Nobody is giving it their best shot. Every performer acts as if they're performing on a stage, with the large physical mannerisms that go along with it. The performances seem more dated than the script, as everyone still delivering lines like they assume people spoke back then.

On the upside, it's incredibly pretty. Visually the film pops with colours and is a real delight to watch. But good visuals can't make up for the drab performances. It does look like it was fun to make, but that doesn't make it fun to watch.
