8 Most Disappointing Movie Sequels & Remakes Of 2021

1. Tom & Jerry

Tom and Jerry movie
Warner Bros.

Was anybody asking for this? Were many people even aware it came out? Tom and Jerry appears to have made little to no impact on people this year. Doing a full-length feature based on Tom and Jerry is not an easy task because the originals were based around having madcap pace, and trying to maintain that over the course of 90 minutes is incredibly difficult and you need someone talented at the helm to pull it off (the best recent example of a film just being constant action and still working as a film would be Mad Max: Fury Road, but I'm not expecting George Miller to do a Hanna Barbera adaptation).

Also, they can't talk, no matter what the 1992 adaptation said.

For some reason, the filmmakers attempted to provide a backstory to the iconic rivalry of the characters here. Tom is attempting to make money playing music in a park, Jerry upstages him and they end up fighting, breaking Tom's keyboard. We don't need 30 minutes to set the characters up. One's a cat, one's a mouse, they fight. That's all that's needed. Although if you cut all of that out you would cut out possibly the only good line in the movie: "he’s not a blind cat playing the keyboard, he’s a regular cat, this is an outrage".

Everything about this film just screams "contractual obligation". There's no love for the characters, no passion, no desire to make the best film possible. A lazy, stumbling disappointment, although Patsy Ferran in her role as one of the hotel staff is a revelation; more of her please.
