8 Most Disappointing Movie Sequels & Remakes Of 2021

2. Coming 2 America

The original Coming To America was released in 1988 and was a commercial and critical success, being one of those films which even if not everybody likes, very few people actually hate. But with the exception of an attempted television series in 1989, there's been no update to the series. A gap of over 30 years between films might make you think they were waiting for just the right story to tell, that the creators were waiting for the perfect way to make a sequel.

Coning 2 America is not the perfect story though. It's not even necessary. It's basically the first film again, with a similar story, repeated characters, and even some of the same jokes. There's a fine line between sequel and retread, and this film does cartwheels down that line. The whole film is predicated on Eddie Murphy's character being date raped by Leslie Jones. The characters seem to treat it as his fault, and the film basically treats it like a joke. It's an uncomfortable plot point to base a lighthearted comedy around.

Eddie Murphy isn't even as likeable in this film as he was in the first one. The film has no idea how to treat him. He's the king, but he never feels like he's in charge, he's just the typical Eddie Murphy fast talker smartass, and then once in a while making him the comedic straight man. It's strangely inconsistent and harms your enjoyment.
