With hobbits, wizards, elves, orcs and many more by the bucket load, it's safe to say The Lord of the Rings trilogy is populated by some of the most colourful and memorable characters in the whole movie world. But what more can you expect from a series that revolutionised cinema and is often considered the greatest trilogy of all time?

Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings series is a masterpiece that breathed life into what was considered an unadaptable book and completely nailed it. It's teeming with detail, love and passion for the story. However, with the sheer amount of characters, plot lines, lands and creatures on display, it's no surprise that a few figures flew under the radar of mainstream audiences.

The following characters - big or small - played an excellent part in the series but still ended up falling by the wayside when compared to more prominent names like Aragorn or Frodo. Still, in the words of Tolkien himself, "even the smallest person can change the course of the future". Thus, it's time for these less appreciated faces to get their time in the limelight.

With teeth like that, how can this guy ever get overlooked?

One of the best things about The Lord of the Rings trilogy is that you've got the option of watching the theatrical release or the extended edition. Die-hard fans will, of course, take the latter option and are thus treated to the presence of this epic character. Sadly, his relegation to this special edition means he doesn't get the mainstream recognition he deserves.

Simply put, this man, or beast, or whatever you want to call him, has one of the most gnarly designs in the whole franchise. His painful-looking visor, gaping mouth and stained teeth make him gross and creepy all in one neat package. Despite only appearing in one scene, he's easily one of Mordor's most disturbing servants.

His striking visage, outstanding performance from Bruce Spence and intimidating presence have all the necessary ingredients to make him iconic. Unfortunately, thanks to his lack of theatrical exposure and brief appearance, he's not remembered as well as he should be.
