8 Most Unexplainable Horror Movie Moments

7. The The Psychic Connection In 'Signs'

The Ring
Buena Vista Pictures

Signs isn't M. Night Shyamalan's greatest movie, but it does get a lot of things right where suspense and jump scares are concerned. The basic premise of the film revolves around a series of crop circles having to do with an imminent alien invasion.

Shoot to the end of the film, and Joaquin Phoenix's Merrill Hess uses a baseball bat to hit glasses of water while pummeling an alien. The glasses had been placing all around the house by one of the kids throughout the film. Doing this causes water to splash all over the aliens, causing them harm.

Ok, so the premise doesn't make a lot of sense, but if you can get over the fact that aliens opted to invade a planet that was literally covered with water (acid as far as they were concerned), it's not a bad flick. The only problem with it had to do with the connection between the kid, the water, and Merrill, which didn't exactly add up.

Earlier in the film, there were hints of a psychic prognostication related to the water, the aliens, and Merrill's use of the bat, but this was never explained. Theories have cropped up online that Signs may be an allegory about the battle between good vs. evil, and one man's struggle through the extremes of his faith, using the movie's connection to Christianity to explain the connection. While that may be true of Shyamalan's intent, the movie's ambiguity leaves it open to interpretation by not explaining it outright.
