8 Movie Franchises That Continued Long After Their “Final” Chapter

4. Saw 3D: The Final Chapter

The original Saw was a twisty thriller that gave James Wan a healthy career - but like most horror franchises before it - the quality steadily dipped over time. When Saw VI became the lowest grossing entry - despite being one of the better sequels – the studio decided to call it quits with part seven.

The movie had the task of wrapping up the loose ends of the series and answering the lingering question of Dr Gordon’s survival. There was ugliness behind the scenes before production started, when the director of part six – and longtime series editor – Kevin Greutert was forced off Paranormal Activity 2 by a clause in his Saw contract. The production company was angry he was working on a rival franchise, so they intentionally threw a spanner in the works.

This might explain the ugly, downbeat tone of Saw 3D, where hateful characters get destroyed in hateful ways. The story was half-hearted, the Dr Gordon twist blindingly obvious. It just wasn’t a satisfying end.

Nobody really believed The Final Chapter would actually be the end, though, and a new sequel titled Saw: Legacy will arrive in time for Halloween 2017.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
