8 Movies From 2016 That Deserve A Second Chance
1. Suicide Squad
Aside from Christopher Nolan’s movies, DC’s quality control has never been particularly high, so audiences can be forgiven for approaching Suicide Squad with low expectations. View David Ayer's movie with expectations so low they’re dragging across the floor and you can overlook the overlong backstories as well as a plot that’s alternately simplistic and senseless.
Suicide Squad’s strongest suit is its cast of characters, who even though they’re supposed to be “the worst of the worst” emerge as a likable bunch you want to spend two hours with despite numerous bumps in the road. Everybody was quick to write Will Smith off in 2016 but he comes off well here as does Margot Robbie, and they have more to work with here than they did in Focus, their previous collaboration. Even Jai Courtney can’t destroy the movie, so director Ayer must be doing something right.
Ayer is no stranger to studio interference, having seen his aptly titled movie Sabotage cut down from three hours to under two at the request of the suits. Suicide Squad is really no better or worse than Sabotage, but it’s a jaded and cynical viewer who doesn’t prefer it to Batman V Superman.
