8 Movies That Inspired Online Protests

1. Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad Max: Fury Road
Warner Bros.

What They Said: Prior to the film’s release, an anti-feminist blog (whose author admitted he hadn’t seen the finished film) commented that “men in America and around the world are going to be duped by explosions, fire tornadoes and desert raiders into seeing what is guaranteed to be nothing more than a piece of feminist propaganda.”

Calling for a boycott, the author added: “Do yourself and all men across the world a favour. Not only REFUSE to see the movie but spread the word to as many men as possible….because if they sheepishly attend and Fury Road becomes a blockbuster then you, me and all other men (and real women) will never be able to see a real action movie again that doesn’t contain some damn political lecture.”

What Happened: Here’s irony for you – Fury Road was the first piece of “feminist propaganda” to be outperformed by a movie directed by a woman. Pitch Perfect 2 opened at #1 with a $69 million gross (compared to Fury Road’s $45 million), but Mad Max ultimately won out with a $378 million worldwide gross compared to PP2’s $287 million.

Nominated for ten Oscars, Fury Road won six, so get ready for a clutch of feminist action movies that attract similar hostility in the future.
