8 Problems With John Wick No-One Wants To Admit

2. The Franchise Is No Better Than Other Hollywood Action Films

Film critics get a lot of flak these days and while that actually isn't fair at all (they're usually quite trustworthy), cases like the John Wick films do undermine their credibility.

The John Wick films are talked about as if they're an antidote to the average Hollywood action film and that's simply not true. What are some of the main problems with (some, though not all) Hollywood action movies today? They don't have any tension, they lack any substance, the villains are underwhelming, the main character is invulnerable... the John Wick films tick all of those boxes.

It is true that the cinematography is better than in other modern action films while the martial arts-based action sequences are unique for this era and the R rating certainly adds plenty, so in a handful of areas John Wick is superior to other modern action films. Nevertheless, with the terrible writing and complete lack of suspense that plagues all three of the films, they really aren't anything new or superior in the grand scheme of things.

So, the fact that these movies get such positive reviews when they make SO many mistakes that other action movies get attacked for doesn't feel very fair.
