8 Promising Things Ben Affleck Will Bring To A Batman Film
1. A Crime-Centric Narrative
Man Of Steel and Batman V Superman have dealt with cataclysmic events and massive, power-mad schemes, but that’s not really the kind of stuff Batman typically handles. Even his investigation into Superman didn't feel true to how he usually operates. Batman is on the streets, fighting common criminals who often just want to make money, kill people, or both.
A successful Batman film ought to operate primarily in the crime genre and this is the reason why so many were ecstatic with Affleck’s involvement. Gone Baby Gone and The Town are two incredible crime films and show what an adept handle he has on the genre. He knows what makes that type of story work and has proven that on multiple occasions.
Affleck's films consistently have a serious tone but not in the typical dark and gritty way of so many blockbusters. Their nature feels earned and believable, not just bleak for the sake of it.
If Batman is to be handled as a crime story that happens to star Batman as opposed to a superhero movie with some crime in it, then it's hard to argue against Ben Affleck as the director. This is his wheelhouse and that's cause for some hope.
