Amid claims that Stephen King's opus is unfilmable, it's a bold man who takes on such a project as their Hollywood blockbuster debut.

Nothing about Arcel's back catalogue suggests he has the credentials to take on Dark Tower. He may have earned critical acclaim and accolades for his work on the Mads Mikkelsen-fronted A Royal Affair, but this is an entirely different proposition.

The fact Sony allegedly considered giving Arcel the boot in favour of somebody more experienced only compounds these fears, with reports in the trade mags suggesting phrases like "out of his depth" were bandied about.

For better or worse, Arcel saw the project through and has since denied there was any rift with the studio, but let's see how his relationship with them holds up when the box office figures come in.
