8 Recent Movie Deaths That MUST Stay Permanent

1. Tony Stark (Avengers: Endgame)

As alluded to in the earlier Black Widow mention, Avengers: Endgame had to have consequences.

For a shared realm of movies and characters that, by that point, had spanned 11 years and 22 movies, Endgame had to hit home in a big way. Getting cold feet on holding back on any major deaths would've not only made Endgame feel like a disappointment, it would've also chipped away at the exemplary work Marvel Studios had done for the past 11 years.

When it came down to Tony Stark to snap half of the universe's population back into existence, knowing that it would cost him his life, this was one of the biggest moments in the MCU so far. Not only was it Stark serving himself up as a sacrificial lamb, but this was Stark leading by example and showing the other Marvel heroes what they themselves may need to do in the future.

The death of Iron Man is also a major influence on the life of Spider-Man, with the loss of Stark being a hammer blow for Tom Holland's Peter Parker. And that was part of the brilliance of Spider-Man: Far From Home. As in, part of the reason why that movie was so fantastic was down to Peter having to somehow deal with his own personal grief while also having to publicly fill the boots of the Armoured Avenger.

If Tony Stark ever comes back to life, that's when you know the MCU has well and truly jumped the shark.

Once described as the Swiss Army Knife of WhatCulture, Andrew can usually be found writing, editing, or presenting on a wide range of topics. As a lifelong wrestling fan, horror obsessive, and comic book nerd, he's been covering those topics professionally as far back as 2010. In addition to his current WhatCulture role of Senior Content Producer, Andrew previously spent nearly a decade as Online Editor and Lead Writer for the world's longest-running genre publication, Starburst Magazine, and his work has also been featured on BBC, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, WhatToWatch, Sportkskeeda, and various other outlets, in addition to being a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic.
