8 Scenes That Would Have Ruined The Original Star Wars Trilogy
4. Luke Hits On Leia At The Rebel Base - The Empire Strikes Back
Here's an awkward instance in the fourth draft of The Empire Strikes Back that, had it been included, would have changed the Star Wars timeline forever. In a negative way. In Lawrence Kasdan's fourth draft script for The Empire Strikes Back, then, there was a particularly notable scene in which Luke - alone with Leia at the Rebel base on Hoth - hits on Leia, who totally could not have been planned to be his sister at the time, because yuck. Here's the scene as it was written in the draft:
LUKE"I don't really know how to say this... I never have before... Leia, you know how I feel about you..."She does and it's confusing. Their lips are very close. About to kiss. The door opens noisily and Threepio enters with Artoo. Leia pulls back, startled. Luke realizes the moment has been lost.
Yes: this moment of near-incest is thankfully prevented because C-3PO and R2-D2 decided to walk in on Luke and Leia just in the nick of time. But knowing now that they're siblings in retrospect makes the scene description "their lips are very close" really, really creepy; had Lucas and Kasdan gone down this route, the whole Skywalker family aspect would have been totally ruined - thankfully this scene was abandoned in the next draft and replaced with a brief kiss to make Han jealous.
