8 Sci-Fi Inventions Ruined By Science

1. Real Holograms

Real. In the substantive, literal sense. Real.

I don’t want to hear about the time you saw Tupac perform on stage with Snoop. That wasn’t a hologram. It was CG smoke and mirrors. It's called a Pepper's ghost.

The problem with the construct of the hologram (i.e., light), as mentioned in the lightsaber post, is that we have no way to limit its projection. That is to say, until we block the projection using a material. We’ve been able to store/stop light (read about it, here) but we cannot limit the distance it travels by arbitrary means.

I know, I know. Researchers at NYU are currently working on creating a virtual environment designed to mimic a holodeck but, and this may be me picking at semantics again, we’ll still need goggles. The only way I'm signing up for that is if they make them look like Geordi's visor.

I suppose our deceased rappers are limited to the second dimension for the moment but, hey, at least we know we can bring them "back" from the comfort of our own homes. Something to think about this Halloween.
