8 Things Batman V Superman Did Better Than Captain America: Civil War
3. The Weight Of Collateral Damage On Superheroes
It’s a fair bet neither Warner Bros. nor Zach Snyder was expecting the tidal wave of hate they received for Man Of Steel’s destruction porn ending, so they made the aftermath of the fight a central premise of the sequel. Sure, Superman did his best to save lives that day but he caused a fair bit of damage himself, which clearly weighs on his conscience.
The consequences of that day also lead him into conflict with Batman in the first place, and from his point of view, it would be easy to view Superman as a menace. This is a big theme in the movie, and while the filmmakers clearly play it safe with all the “abandoned” areas the characters fight in, later on, it showed a progression from the explody ending of the last time.
On the flipside, this discussion fells a little forced in Civil War, where the conversation has never really come up before. The footage Ross shows the group of all the chaos they’ve been involved with feels like an easy shortcut to justify Tony Stark’s pro-treaty stance, and it lacks the crushing weight that Snyder added to his story.
