One of the most annoying things that makes Marvel movie plots feel inconsequential is that the consequences of them are rarely addressed in following films. The fall of S.H.E.L.D. should have had huge ramifications, but it was barely touched upon after Winter Soldier, just like other plots such as Tony destroying his suits or Loki taking over Asgard.

Infinity War, however, actually explores the consequences and the fallout of previous movies. Everything from the Sokovia Accords to the battle of New York to, of course, the location of every Infinity Stone informs either the plot or characters, which goes a long way in making it feel like a proper culmination of this 10-year journey,

Not only that, but it also dives into the history of the MCU in surprising ways, paying off threads that were long thought to have been dropped and revisiting characters fans never expected to see again. It doesn't feel inconsequential in the slightest, and if anything awards even more significance to the movies that preceded it.
