9 Actors Who Overstayed Their Welcome In Roles
5. Jennifer Lawrence - Mystique
X-Men: First Class made some of the greatest casting decisions the franchise had ever seen. The core three-some of McAvoy, Fassbender, and Lawrence were all great picks, with each of them delivered astute and affecting takes on the iconic roles.
Lawrence was arguably the best among them. Where the original films portrayed Mystique as a vile and relentless killer, for the most part, Lawrence had the opportunity to deliver a more nuanced performance. Chronicling the character's inner conflict regarding her appearance, Lawrence was able to tap into Mystique's most basic desires in a surprisingly relevant way.
But somewhere between First Class and Apocalypse, something changed. Drastically.
While her performance was once again great in Day of Future Past, by the time of the next film, Lawrence could clearly not care less about her performance. As the writers and creators pushed her character more to the forefront of the films and stripped her of her status as a villain, in favor of having a global movie star lead their cast, they stripped her of any interesting aspects.
Instead, Mystique was now a reluctant savior of mutant-kind. And while that was an interesting change, Lawrence failed to even slightly sell the performance. Her line delivery was limp, her action sequences exuded no energy, and overall she just constantly appeared to be dying to escape every scene she was in.
