9 Actors Who Overstayed Their Welcome In Roles
3. Rebel Wilson - Fat Amy
The Pitch Perfect 'franchise' is an intriguing case study in and of itself. The first film was the little-acapella-film-that-could, sprouting incredible legs at the box office and going on to make a pretty penny for everyone involved. So of course, sequels were destined to happen. But strangely, the second film wound up being even better than the first. It embraced the goofier moments of humor in a relatively intellectual fashion and showcased more of the personality that made the first film resonate with audiences.
One of the key ingredients of both of those films was Rebel Wilson's performance as the affectionately-named Fat Amy. Wilson's role as a side character was ridiculous and over-the-top, but her improv worked in the larger contexts of the films themselves. She added humor and value to the films without ever taking away from the central character arcs or narrative thrust.
The recently released Pitch Perfect 3 decided to try a different strategy.
Instead, apparently not willing to heed the warning of any of the dozens of other franchises that have made this exact same mistake, they pushed Wilson's side character to the forefront. That was never going to do the film or performance any favors, but the storyline of Fat Amy as the daughter of a criminal who has to do some espionage-ing about flat-out doomed it.
The outcome was a hollow, egregious, and grating performance that might as well have defecated upon anything remotely redeeming about her prior performances.
