9 Awesome Remakes Of Terrible Movies

7. The Blob

Captain America
Paramount Pictures / TriStar Pictures

A slow moving lump of alien jelly isn’t the most obvious choice for a terrifying monster, but it all depends on how it’s handled.

The Original: It’s a little unfair to call the original terrible, but there’s no denying it’s aged really badly. Steve McQueen is woefully miscast as the oldest looking teenager ever, the dialogue is unbearably stilted and it’s just not scary.

Some of the effects are impressive for the era and the cinema scene is cool, but it’s mostly remembered for the uniqueness of the monster than the quality of the film itself.

The Remake: The 1988 remake takes the idea and dials it right the hell up. It manages a perfect balance between scares and humour, the young heroes are likable, the practical effects hold up remarkably well - a couple of dodgy shots aside - and there are some shocking deaths.

Hell, it even managed to make the monster scary.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
