9 Awesome Remakes Of Terrible Movies
6. I Am Legend
I Am Legend is a classic vampire novel that inspired everyone from Stephen King to George Romero, and it’s been adapted to the screen three times so far.
The Original: The Omega Man was actually the second adaptation (following Vincent Price’s underwhelming The Last Man On Earth) and was a big hit for Charlton Heston. Too bad it’s a camp mess with garish visuals, lame monsters, a weird religious subtext and a total disregard for the book.
There are some striking shots of a deserted L.A. and Heston has the charisma to command the screen, but the movie surrounding him isn’t a bit lame.
The Remake: The Will Smith version takes liberties with the book too, but it was the one that captured the crushing isolation of the character. The visuals are gorgeous, Smith gives a heartfelt performance and the scene where he has to explore a dark building is downright terrifying.
Sure the CGI is ropey and the final act is a letdown, but when I Am Legend is good it’s very good indeed.
