9 Awful Movies That Bankrupted Studios

5. Rise of the Guardians (Dreamworks)

Rise of the Guardians Some might have enjoyed Rise of the Guardians, but not me, and though it turned a profit - making over $300 million against a $145 million budget - this didn't prove to be enough for Dreamworks CEO Jeff Katzenberg, who brought about some major company changes as a result of the film not making more money. Noting that it was their "first movie...in 17 in a row that didn't work", Katzenberg "reset" the company, laying off 350 employees of various designations across the board. Not quite bankrupted, sure, but given the $83 million write-down the company suffered as a result, it's pretty catastrophic. The lesson we learn from this? Maybe don't advertise a film to death; how the film didn't make Dreamworks a single cent of profit when it grossed $300 million is anyone's guess, but you can bet that the wrong people probably ended up getting laid off.
