9 Best Movies Announced This Week (Jan 27th)
5. Weegee
Release: TBC
Decades before Nightcrawler was even an idea, real life photojournalist Arthur Fellig - otherwise known as Weegee the Famous - made his name in 1930s New York chasing police cars and ambulances to capture life and death in the city.
The film of his life and his obsession with documenting antisocial behaviour will be directed by Oscar-winning film-maker Errol Morris, who won an Academy Award for his documentary about former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara, Fog of War. He talked up Weegee's relevance in the announcement on THR:
“Weegee may not have singlehandedly invented the noir sensibility, but without him, noir would be unimaginable. He recognized he was constructing his own vision of reality, replete with vivid characters — rich, poor, depraved and otherwise.”
