9 Blaxploitation Films You Need To See
1. Coffy
When her little sister becomes addicted to heroin at the cost of her life, Coffy (the amazing Pam Grier) sets out on a one woman crusade to bring everyone involved in the drug trade to justice. A justice that is dealt out by splattering as many brains across the city as she possibly can.
Released in 1973, Coffy stands out from the rest of the genre by having a strong female lead as well as taking an anti-drug stance in a decade where it was still cool for movies to be high.
Initially made after American International Pictures lost the rights to Cleopatra Jones, it would turn Pam Grier into an icon and launch her career as the go to woman if you needed villains killed with style.
Strong, intelligent and oozing sex appeal, Coffy is the prototype bad-ass and the standard by which all other lead characters would and should be held.
And let's face it, if a shotgun wielding, revenge seeking Pam Grier and her fantastic afro doesn't convince you Blaxploitation is worth your time, then nothing will.
