8. No Escape (1994)

Ray Liotta is convicted of murdering his commanding officer following a military massacre he was ordered to perpetrate. After years of behaving badly in various prisons he is exiled to the penal colony Absilom. The 90's were a great time for post apocalyptic penal colony movies. This was one of the best. The colony was an entire island, populated by the worst the world had to offer. The Island is run by a psychopath inspired by a Hot Topic ad, replete with "fierce" piercings and bone necklace. His gang of thugs is of course counterbalanced with a group of reformed baddies led by Lance Henriksen. These two factions cannot "just get along" and of course Ray Ray gets tossed right in the middle. No one really mentions why this island of super-duper bad guys is outfitted with so much firepower but that's just a mere technicality in 90's action movie world. Stuff gets blown up, people die grisly deaths, Mr. Liotta broods and stomps and inspires and of course kills his way onto a helicopter to escape as the credits roll. Explosions, elaborate forest booby traps, explosions, vigilante justice, explosions and Ray Liotta; who needs a coherent plot when you can just blow crap up?
