6. Days of Thunder (1990)
Top Gun in stock cars! Oh man this movie really brought it. Tom Cruise is stock car superstar Cole Trickle (hold on, I need a minute, it's hard to type when laughing uncontrollably). Michael Rooker is his main rival Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker!). Robert Duvall is the salty dog veteran Harry Hogge. John C. Reilly, foreshadowing his days in Talladega Nights, stars as car chief Buck Bretherton (who the heck came up with these names?). Nicole Kidman plays a neurosurgeon. That's just the character list. Let us not forget the completely realistic (read: unbelievably over the top) race scenes, a wheelchair race in a hospital and of course, Michael Rooker and Tom Cruise racing rental cars through the streets (and beaches) of Daytona. And what was with the dirty faces? I've seen plenty of NASCAR races in my day and never once did a driver come out of a car looking like this.
Hollywood makeup. Gotta love it!
